Thornton Overview

Like many of America's suburbs, Thornton was just farm land until the early 1950s. By creating Thornton, developer Sam Hoffman worked to create the first planned community in Adams County. Since 1954, the Thornton Community Association, or TCA, has helped to guide development in Thornton. One of Thornton's unique features is the city's effort to make Thornton a greener place to live and work. Their conservation initiatives include tree planting and energy efficient streetlights; the city also became a member of the United States Green Building Council in 2009, and even the city trash trucks run on biodiesel. Besides being an ever-greener community, Thornton works hard to maintain public green spaces, parks, and rec centers. Additionally, Thornton is home to a fairly active arts scene.
